Defqon.1

Biddinghuizen is a quiet village on the Flevoland polders — land reclaimed from the IJsselmeer sea in 1968 — that turns into the global capital of hardstyle each June when Defqon.1 takes over its event site on the IJsselmeer coast. Flat green horizons, wide Dutch skies and the salt breeze of the inland sea frame one of the hardest-hitting weekends in dance music: four days, 200+ hardstyle, hardcore and raw acts, and the famous 'Endshow' with 65,000 warriors chanting in unison. The village's location on the Flevoland polder puts it 60 minutes from Amsterdam and at the gateway to the Netherlands' most historic region: the Hanseatic Zuiderzee towns of Elburg, Harderwijk and the fishing village of Urk are all within 20 minutes.

Getting There

Schiphol Airport (AMS) is 70 minutes by train + shuttle. Defqon runs direct buses from Amsterdam, Utrecht and Zwolle. The nearest station is Dronten (10-min shuttle).

Best Time

June for Defqon; April–September for warm weather. April for tulip season; the polders bloom with flowers.

Currency

Euro (€). Netherlands is nearly cashless — contactless cards everywhere; bring no cash.

Language

Dutch. English is spoken fluently by ~90% of the population — the highest rate in the non-English-speaking world.

Getting Around

Trains and buses connect all Dutch cities within an hour. Rent a bike — Flevoland is the flattest province and has dedicated cycle paths to every village. Day trips to Amsterdam, Giethoorn and the Zuiderzee towns are easy.

Top Attractions

Batavialand & the Dutch East Indiaman
01

Batavialand & the Dutch East Indiaman

A shipyard museum in Lelystad 15 minutes away, centred on the Batavia — a full-scale replica of a 1628 Dutch East India Company merchant ship, built with 17th-century tools and techniques. The museum tells the story of the Dutch Golden Age, the VOC trading empire, and the polder land reclamation that created Flevoland itself.

Walibi Holland Theme Park
02

Walibi Holland Theme Park

The Netherlands' biggest roller-coaster park, 10 minutes from the Defqon site — 7 major coasters including Goliath (46-metre drop) and Lost Gravity. Walibi hosts music events year-round and is a full-day adrenaline escape from the festival. The park sits on the Flevoland polders with wide-open Dutch skies.

Urk — The Fishing Village on the Sea
03

Urk — The Fishing Village on the Sea

A deeply religious Protestant fishing village that was an island in the Zuiderzee until the 1942 polder reclamation joined it to the mainland. Urk still wears its fishing heritage — lace curtains in every window, smokehouses curing eel, and a lighthouse. The harbour at sunset is one of the most authentic Dutch scenes. 15 minutes from the Defqon site.

Schokland — UNESCO Polder Island
04

Schokland — UNESCO Polder Island

A former island in the Zuiderzee that was evacuated in 1859 as the sea swallowed it — then left high and dry when the Noordoostpolder was reclaimed in 1942. Schokland's church, lighthouse and terp mound are now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, a monument to the Dutch 1,000-year battle against the sea. 20 minutes from Defqon.

Giethoorn — The Village Without Roads
05

Giethoorn — The Village Without Roads

A fairy-tale village 40 minutes away where there are no roads — only canals, thatched-roof farmhouses and footbridges. Rent a whisper boat (electric, silent) and glide the 7-km canal network past 18th-century homes and gardens. Giethoorn is the Netherlands' most photographed village and a perfect hardstyle-recovery day.

Elburg — The Hanseatic Walled Town
06

Elburg — The Hanseatic Walled Town

A perfectly preserved 14th-century Hanseatic League town, 20 minutes from Defqon — a rectangle of walls, gates, a fish-smokehouse and a Gothic church built on a grid plan (rare in medieval towns). Walk the walls, see the Botermarkt (butter market square) and eat gerookte paling (smoked eel) — the local specialty since the Zuiderzee days.

Amsterdam — Canals & Museums
07

Amsterdam — Canals & Museums

The Dutch capital, 60 minutes by train. The 17th-century canal ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site of 1,500 bridges; the Rijksmuseum holds Vermeer's Milkmaid and Rembrandt's Night Watch; the Van Gogh Museum has the world's largest collection of his works. Anne Frank House, the red-light district and the coffeeshops complete the picture.

The Afsluitdijk — The Dam That Tamed the Sea
08

The Afsluitdijk — The Dam That Tamed the Sea

The 32-km dam that closed off the Zuiderzee from the North Sea in 1932, creating the freshwater IJsselmeer and making the Flevoland polders possible. Drive or cycle its entire length — the sea on one side, the lake on the other, with the horizon a straight line in every direction. It is the engineering feat that created the land Defqon stands on.
