Tomorrowland

Boom is a small Flemish town of 17,000 in the Antwerp province, nestled along the Rupel river between Antwerp and Brussels. For two weekends each July, it transforms into the epicentre of global electronic music when Tomorrowland — consistently ranked the #1 festival on Earth — takes over the De Schorre provincial domain. Its wooded hills, artificial lakes and storybook bridges become a fantasy world of 15 stages, 800 artists and 400,000 visitors from 200 countries. The town itself is a sleepy Flemish commune the rest of the year, but its location makes it the perfect base for exploring Belgium's richest region: the baroque squares of Antwerp, the medieval canals of Bruges and Ghent, and the cobbled streets of Mechelen are all within 45 minutes.

Getting There

Brussels Airport (BRU) is 35 min by train; Antwerp Airport 30 min. Boom has its own train station — a 10-minute walk to De Schorre. Tomorrowland runs free shuttle buses from Brussels and Antwerp.

Best Time

July for Tomorrowland; May–September for warm weather. December for Bruges Christmas markets.

Currency

Euro (€). Belgium is fully cashless at Tomorrowland; carry a card everywhere.

Language

Dutch (Flemish). English is universally spoken. French is the second official language.

Getting Around

Trains connect Boom to Antwerp (20 min), Brussels (35 min), Bruges (90 min) and Ghent (75 min). Rent a bike — Flanders is flat and cycle-path heaven.

De Schorre Provincial Domain — Tomorrowland's Home
01

De Schorre Provincial Domain — Tomorrowland's Home

The 130-hectare park that becomes Tomorrowland each July — wooded hills, a lake, an amphitheatre and the famous covered bridge entrance. Outside festival weeks it's a free public park with walking trails, a playground and a sculpture trail. Walk the grounds and imagine 400,000 ravers where deer now graze.

Antwerp Old Centre & Grote Markt
02

Antwerp Old Centre & Grote Markt

Belgium's most fashionable city, 20 minutes north. The Grote Markt is a Renaissance square of guild halls and the Brabo Fountain; nearby, the Cathedral of Our Lady houses four Rubens masterpieces. The diamond district, fashion boutiques of the Meir, and the riverside MAS museum make Antwerp a perfect festival-free day.

Bruges — The Medieval Fairy Tale
03

Bruges — The Medieval Fairy Tale

A UNESCO World Heritage city of canals, cobbled lanes and swans — Europe's best-preserved medieval centre, 90 minutes by train. Climb the 13th-century Belfry, take a canal boat, visit the Church of the Holy Blood, and eat chocolate from the dozens of artisan chocolatiers. Bruges is Belgium's most visited city for a reason.

Ghent — The Hidden Gem
04

Ghent — The Hidden Gem

Belgium's best-kept secret — a medieval university city of castles, canals and three towers, with none of Bruges' tourist crowds. The 12th-century Gravensteen fortress, the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb altarpiece (one of the most stolen artworks in history), and the car-free city centre make Ghent the locals' favourite.

Rubens House, Antwerp
05

Rubens House, Antwerp

The former home and studio of Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), the Baroque master who put Antwerp on the art world map. Restored to its 17th-century grandeur, it houses a collection of his paintings and those of his pupils. The garden is a hidden oasis in the city centre.

Mechelen — Between the Big Cities
06

Mechelen — Between the Big Cities

A historic city halfway between Antwerp and Brussels, often overlooked. St. Rumbold's Tower (a UNESCO-listed belfry) offers 360° views; the river Dyle flows past the 16th-century palace of Margaret of Austria. Mechelen is quieter and more authentic than its famous neighbours — and 15 minutes from Boom.

Brussels — The Grand-Place
07

Brussels — The Grand-Place

The capital of Europe, 35 minutes away. The Grand-Place is the most beautiful medieval square in northern Europe, ringed by gilded guild halls and the Gothic Town Hall. See the Manneken Pis, the Magritte Museum, and the Art Nouveau houses of Victor Horta. The Atomium — a 102-metre stainless-steel atom built for the 1958 World's Fair — is a surreal must-see.

Antwerp Zoo & Railway
08

Antwerp Zoo & Railway

Founded in 1843, Belgium's oldest zoo sits right beside Antwerp Central Station — itself one of the world's most beautiful railway stations, a multi-level cathedral of marble, steel and glass. See the zoo's 5,000 animals, then look up at the station's dome. An easy half-day from Boom.
