VISIT
TRANSILVANIA
Beyond the decks: Cluj-Napoca — the beating heart of Transilvania and home of Untold, the world's #3 festival. Baroque squares, gothic spires, salt-mine cathedrals, and Carpathian wilderness — one drop away from the dancefloor.
Beyond the festival grounds, Transilvania unfolds in layers — medieval Saxon citadels, subterranean salt cathedrals, gothic castles and the wildest gorges in the Carpathians. Here are the places that make a trip to Untold unforgettable.
Salina Turda — The Underground Cathedral
A 13th-century salt mine 30 km from Cluj, transformed into a subterranean wonderland 120 metres below ground. Ride a ferris wheel inside the mine, row across an underground lake, and walk through cathedral-sized salt caverns lit in eerie blue light. Widely called the most surreal attraction in Europe.
Transilvania · ROTurda Gorge (Cheile Turzii)
A dramatic 3-km limestone canyon with 300-metre vertical walls, carved by the Hășdate river. Hiking trails, caves and wildflower meadows make it one of Romania's most spectacular natural sights — 45 minutes from Cluj.
Transilvania · ROBánffy Castle, Bonțida
An 18th-century baroque palace once called 'the Versailles of Transilvania,' now partially restored and host to an annual arts festival. Its romantic ruins and grand staircase sit 30 km from Cluj in the Someș valley.
Transilvania · ROOld Town & St. Michael's Church
The city's living room — Union Square framed by pastel merchants' houses and the 15th-century Gothic St. Michael's Church, whose 80-metre tower is the tallest in Transilvania. By day a café paradise; during Untold an open-air stage.
Transilvania · ROBotanical Garden & Central Park
Cluj's green heart — the 14-hectare Alexandru Borza Botanical Garden with 10,000 species, a Roman garden and a Japanese garden; and the lakeside Central Park that links the old town to Cluj Arena and Untold's main stages.
Transilvania · ROMureș Valley & Apuseni Day-Trip
An hour south of Cluj, the Apuseni Mountains open into cave systems like Scărișoara (with a permanent underground glacier), wooden villages, and the Turda Gorge's lesser-known twin, the Pădurea Craiului karst.
